Becoming a foster carer

It's fantastic that you are considering a career as a foster parent! Currently, UK Fostering or other fostering agencies are actively seeking out more foster parents.

If you're prepared to begin an application, the stages listed below will help you understand what to expect. Please get in touch with us if you have questions but aren't sure if you want to apply just yet.

Step 1: Contact us.

When you are ready to begin a fostering application, our social worker for fostering recruiting, Lauren, will call you and ask you a few questions about your goals, your background, and the space in your house. Additionally, a preliminary application form must be filled out.

Please get in touch with us.

Step 2: Go home

Then Lauren will pay you a visit at home. She will take a quick tour of your home to make sure it is fit for fostering. She will discuss your wish to foster in greater depth with you and anyone else you live with since it is crucial that everyone in your home agrees that foster care services are a good option.

Additionally, paperwork must be completed for background checks to begin. (medical assessment, police check, employment checks, etc.).

Step 3: The group that prepared for Skills to Foster

In order to prepare you for fostering, a three-day mandatory training session will thereafter be offered to you. This course covers the duties of a foster care provider, the value of comprehending a child and their background, dealing with birth families and other professionals, protecting children, and assisting kids in moving on.

After this course, the trainers and you will jointly decide if fostering is the correct choice for you. You will go to the formal assessment procedure if you choose to proceed.

step 4: the evaluation

At least eight visits from an assessing social worker will be made to your house. They will enquire about your family history, starting with your early years and your own upbringing. They will evaluate your formal and informal career history, as well as important personal connections. Your ability to care for children and readiness to become a foster care provider will also be taken into consideration.

The social worker conducting the assessment will also ask for references from individuals who are familiar with you and who can vouch for your suitability to be a foster parent.

Step 5: The fostering panel

Your assessment report will be delivered to Camden's independent fostering panel after the evaluation is complete. The council receives advice from the fostering panel regarding the eligibility of potential foster carers.

The panel will choose whether to advise the council to approve you as a foster carer, but the Assistant Director of Safeguarding and Social Care will make the final call.

From the time you get in touch with us until you are given the go-ahead to become a foster care provider, the fostering assessment typically takes six to eight months to complete. Although we recognize that this is a lengthy period of time, it is crucial that we be as thorough as we can be when choosing who should take care of vulnerable children.
